Why Custom Packaging Can Cost More Than Your First Product Order
By Arnold Ji, Co-Founder of SKDK SPORT
For some projects, the product MOQ may be 500 units.
But custom retail packaging may require around 3,000 bags.
That is how a "simple packaging decision" can create unnecessary cost and inventory before the product has even been tested.
Two Packaging Paths We Offer
At SKDK SPORT, we normally offer customers two packaging paths for private-label sports protection products:
Option 1: Fully Customized Packaging
This is suitable for established brands that need a complete retail identity. The customer can customize the artwork, colors, product information, barcode area, and packaging structure.
However, printing setup, material requirements, and the packaging supplier's separate MOQ can increase the initial investment significantly.
Option 2: SKDK Standard Sports-Gear Packaging
We produce our standard packaging bags in larger batches across multiple compatible products. This helps reduce the unit packaging cost and gives new sellers, distributors, and smaller test orders a cleaner, more practical starting point.
For many compatible orders, we include these standard bags without a separate packaging charge.
The Real Purpose: Remove Avoidable Cost Early
The purpose is not to offer the cheapest-looking packaging. It is to remove an avoidable cost before the customer has validated the product and market.
As the customer grows, we can then move toward fully customized packaging with better cost efficiency.
Good packaging should match the stage of the business. Whether you are starting with knee supports, ankle braces, or wrist wraps, the packaging decision is really a business-stage decision.
For Sellers and Brands
Would you invest in custom packaging from the first order, or validate the product first?

Frequently Asked Questions
Why can custom packaging MOQ be higher than the product MOQ?
Because the packaging runs on a different clock. Your knee supports might have a 500-unit minimum, while the printed bags come from a separate supplier with their own run — around 3,000 bags. Add printing setup, minimum material quantities, and a structure that has to be die-cut, and you can spend more on the bag than on the brace.
Is the cheapest packaging the right choice for a first order?
Cheapest-looking, no. The right choice is the cheapest avoidable cost. You haven't validated the product yet, so a fully custom bag commits money to an assumption — this product, this market, this art direction. We don't push it because it looks cheap. We push the opposite: remove a cost you haven't earned yet.
Do you charge extra for standard packaging?
For many compatible orders we include our standard sports-gear bags with no separate packaging charge. We run them in larger batches across multiple compatible products, which is why the unit cost stays low. The trade-off is that the bag isn't yours — it's ours. That's fine at the test stage and worth revisiting once you're growing.
When should I move from standard bags to fully custom packaging?
Once the product has proved itself and the volume can absorb the setup. Fully custom means you control artwork, colors, product information, the barcode area, and the bag structure — a real retail identity that costs real money to print. Move when your reorder rhythm is predictable, not when your designer is ready.
Is packaging really a business decision rather than a design decision?
It's a business decision that happens to look like a design decision. Same knee support, same factory, same unit price — but a first test order and a scaling brand need different packaging because they sit at different stages. Decide by order stage, not by which bag looks better in the sample photo.
