Why Custom Packaging Can Cost More Than Your First Product Order
By Arnold Ji, Co-Founder of SKDK SPORT
For some projects, the product MOQ may be 500 units.
But custom retail packaging may require around 3,000 bags.
That is how a "simple packaging decision" can create unnecessary cost and inventory before the product has even been tested.
Two Packaging Paths We Offer
At SKDK SPORT, we normally offer customers two packaging paths for private-label sports protection products:
Option 1: Fully Customized Packaging
This is suitable for established brands that need a complete retail identity. The customer can customize the artwork, colors, product information, barcode area, and packaging structure.
However, printing setup, material requirements, and the packaging supplier's separate MOQ can increase the initial investment significantly.
Option 2: SKDK Standard Sports-Gear Packaging
We produce our standard packaging bags in larger batches across multiple compatible products. This helps reduce the unit packaging cost and gives new sellers, distributors, and smaller test orders a cleaner, more practical starting point.
For many compatible orders, we include these standard bags without a separate packaging charge.
The Real Purpose: Remove Avoidable Cost Early
The purpose is not to offer the cheapest-looking packaging. It is to remove an avoidable cost before the customer has validated the product and market.
As the customer grows, we can then move toward fully customized packaging with better cost efficiency.
Good packaging should match the stage of the business. Whether you are starting with knee supports, ankle braces, or wrist wraps, the packaging decision is really a business-stage decision.
For Sellers and Brands
Would you invest in custom packaging from the first order, or validate the product first?
